A Life in Photographic Art my second book.

Although not consciously understanding seeing of negative space my mind already was seeing it. Even most of my earliest images were un cropped or I had a lot of trouble deciding a little off the top or a little off the bottom. Also I was never one to steal a persons image. This women looked at me and my camera, I pointed it at her from shoulder level she nodded an approval, depress the shutter a moment is created. The triangles all lead to the strong yet ambiguous eyes. Tri X 400 at 400 Nikon F 1971 105mm 2.5 lens f-8 1/125 somethings the mind remembers. So for a few or more posts as I file negs from 35 years of following the rectangle observing and commenting I’ll post a little history of my life in photographic art. I hope this will be my second book want a copy?

A Life in Photographic Art

1971 on the Staten Island Ferry a youthful Artist starts a journey. Eye contact, a gesture with camera a nod of yes an image made a nod of thanks. Respect a path is taken, a moment created between subject and artist.

The Big Apple to the City Bus in Olympia. “In Transit” the road goes on forever. June 29th heading to the market the triangles, back light a greeting, an explanation a moment created.

Youth a world to live in a value to hold Keeping the Child a difficult road to travel as the destination is grow up be serious make money discard your childhood dreams make money. Forget the journey it is the destination MONEY appropriate laughter. It is how you look not who you are. No U-Turns

The lilies come in spring, in youth, gently embrace the flower. The lily will return in spring another childhood, your childhood dream.

Spring of ’72 or of Photographic Art

1972 it was a long time ago. The spring of my visual journey one camera two lens a new 105mm and a train trip to NYC. Early weekend day stroll to Staten Island Ferry for a ride over and back. Still a student, yet the seeds are planted the road mapped out. Fertilized with Woodstock, The Vietnam War and social consciousness. The Passionate observer was born.

Already shooting and seeing full frame the rectangle was new composition and visual statements began.

The first years there was so much to see yet being new I sometimes would not shoot for I had not learned the nuance of subtle confrontation. Perhaps this quality taught me to be selective to pre edit what I commented on? Editing isn’t done anymore just make 100 images and post them all good doesn’t matter it is now speed and greed. But I digress to the future 1001101010. This day trip yielded less than a roll of film yet now 38 years later I find almost a quarter of the images worthy of the print.

The women one the link above was immediately worthy of a print and shown for a class assignment. It was not a stolen image as I communicated to her with a gesture that I was going to shoot her a gesture in return and a moment was created. enjoy pjc
past the 140 character digital chains again but this is about the Seventies when there was a deep end to the gene pool. Reality/sarcasm/cynicism/optimism all in the blender to seek provoke communication. ART!
