The lights are on but the lot is empty is this the fate of small business? It’s night so perhaps they are closed. It’s also cold, February 26th 8:30 a polite women stops her car and shuts out the lights and waits for me to get my image civility isn’t dead. I wave her on thank her and stand in the cold. Pondering “Winter in America,” [a song/poem by Gil Scot Heron find it and listen] the world the cold which is not the temperature so much as a metaphor for humanity. Tonight I am warmed by the simple act of kindness of the women not wanting to interrupt my image. pjc

I hope the Windham Diner is in business. It looks like a great little place.
And, yes, I know what you mean about little kindnesses of strangers. They can transform a bad or blah day into one that feels good.

There is a local diner we like to frequent. When we dined there on a weekday 6 months ago, the waitress told us they’d had a line of waiting customers that night before they opened at 6 PM. I happened to drive by there on another weekday last week at 7 PM, but the lights were off and the whole place was dark (Whose light are fled; whose garlands dead. And all but he departed). They were open when I passed by again at 9 PM, but folks are definitely cutting back (ourselves included) and restaurants are feeling the pinch. Winter in America is followed by spring, isn’t it? Or has global warming changed that too? The new administration took over the reins in the darkness of winter; will they lead us now from darkness into the light? (Tamaso ma jyotir gamya)

Sukumar,
I hope it was just a blown fuse of something. Is this an all night diner? The was one in Willimantic that opened at 11pm and closed at 1pm a long time ago. We all are cutting back and the Corp. Restaurants are all cutting their prices so the moms and pops can’t compete. Spring and out of the dark? The earth will provide us with a “spring” but the metaphor of spring for the economy may not arrive. The new administration only thinks they have the reins. But profits are up at Walmart.

I love the Bob’s Big Boy. Several years ago I was involved in some wild bidding for one of these icons. Although I truly want this as a lawn ornament, I dropped out of the bidding at $800. It eventually went to the winning bidder for $1200.
