Human “rights”….hmmmmm. It’s becoming a worldwide oxymoron in my humble opinion. The “rights” seem to only apply to those with money, power, and influence. There are those with money, power, and influence trying to work toward rights for ALL classes of people but what seems so very apparent in the world today is (as Mr. Spock from Star Trek might say) that the rights of the few outweigh the rights of the many. And those “rights” that the few enjoy are, more often than not, much different than the “rights” of the many, where the “few” are the rich and the “many” are the poor or less well-off. Shall we look at the “Bill of Rights” for a moment? For the sake of brevity, let’s just look at the Fourth Amendment. I think our current “president” (and I use the term loosely) should probably have read that before instituting his “Patriot Act”. Domestic spying and such seems to be in direct violation of the Fourth Amendment or am I missing something? And briefly, what about the Second Amendment? There is overwhelming and documented proof that communities that allow concealed carry laws for handguns have SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER crime rates and disinterested parties doing research have interviewed numerous criminals who have across the board indicated that if the places they had committed crimes had allowed concealed carry laws, they most likely would NOT have committed the crime because good citizens would be able to protect themselves. But Nooooooooo. There are those who think that only that bad guys should have guns because they want to outlaw concealed carry laws and institute totally unreasonable “gun control” laws. Well, I will tell you now: if you break into my house, you WILL be carried out in a bag. I’m not a propopent of violence but I WILL protect my family if you intend to do me harm. Why would any person with a brain want to prevent me from doing that? Do gun control advocates actually believe the criminals give a flying **** about gun control laws? It makes their job easier because honest citizen’s “right” to protect themselves are removed. Isn’t it interesting that our capital, Washington DC, had the highest murder rate in the country? Why? Because the criminals knew that there were very strict laws in place in the Beltway that prevented good citizens from protecting themselves. It’s pure and utter bullshit to think criminals are going to obey gun laws. Look up the word “criminal” for God’s sake. There is a reason they are criminals and it’s because they DON’T OBEY THE LAWS.
Human rights? Bill of Rights? They seem to be trampled on by the bon vivant and only become an issue when they feel that some of their “rights” are affected. I don’t want to broad-brush stroke the upper crust but last time I checked, it wasn’t the poor folks of the world who were trying to oppress me or oppress others. That seems to be reserved for those with money, power, and influence. So, have I come full circle yet?
Thanks for allowing me to vent, Peter. Some of these issues are hot-button issues for me and this is one of them. I don’t know what else I can do to help fight for human rights around the world. I write Congress and post to blogs and share my views with anyone willing to discuss these things. People deserve humane treatment around the globe. No one deserves to be treated like a sub-human and yet it seems to be getting worse all the time in spite of the efforts of so many. Who was it that said “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”? (or something to that effect). Was it Lord Acton?
In closing I would say that those who want to deny people their rights (terrorists, oppressive governments, etc) should be prepared to deal with the consequences of doing so. As I said, I’m not an advocate of violence but I am an advocate of PEACEFUL civil disobedience if required. When people stop questioning policy and take everything as the gospel truth that comes from our leaders, both locally and nationally, it sets the stage for a monarchy or dictatorship where the citizens become powerless pawns. No thanks. History has already shown how that story ends and it’s not a happy bedtime story.
Good day!
